Featuring an exceptional sale of Canadiana, featuring selections from the Bienvenu, Van Horne/Ferguson, and East Coast Collections. Spanning the 18th through 20th centuries, the auction brings together distinctive material from across Canada, with a strong emphasis on regional craftsmanship, history, and provenance.
Highlights include early furniture from all regions of Canada and great “smalls” including several “mini collections” of quill boxes, canoe cups, tobacco choppers, and spruce gum boxes, in addition to Canadian artwork, important textiles, and historical items.
Furniture includes a Ukrainian cupboard from the West, several 18th century Quebec pieces including a French Régime buffet and arbalète commode, an Ontario dish dresser, a Waterloo schrank and a cloak cupboard in paint, a Quebec refectory table with stools, East Coast tables, an Ontario lattice back sofa and Niagara Peninsula chests.
Also offered are a Northwest Coast mask and a mammoth “Wild Woman” totem pole, religious sculpture, trade silver, two sailor’s valentines, trade signs and items from the Grenfell Mission including a book cover and purse. Art includes works by Chief James Beaver, A.W. Holdstock and Homer Watson, ship portraits, as well as a rare double- sided painting by William Loney of Prince Edward County, a fraktur by Joseph Baumann, and a military sketch of a War of 1812 Blockhouse by Phillip Bainbrigge.
A number of book pieces are in the sale including many choice items illustrated in “Spirit of Nova Scotia”, “Canadian Country Furniture”, Michel Lessard, and others.
