Auction Item Description:
France, circa 1810, an exceptional set of gilt and patinated bronze candelabra in the Louis XVI style, depicting Bacchus and a “bacchante”, each resting on white marble bases, both signed “Clodion” to the back of the bronze, measuring 18 3/4″ h x 13″ w. Michel Claude Clodion was born in Nancy, France. In 1759, he won the grand prize for sculpture at the Académie Royale. In 1761, he earned the 1st silver medal for studies from models. In 1762, he went to Rome, where his activity was considerable between 1767 and 1771.
